Founder and President
Candy Gallant grew up in a family of animal lovers and rescuers. When she moved to PEI in 1972, she continued the tradition as an owner/operator of pet shops, as an animal protection officer for the PEI Humane Society, and becoming known as the Island’s “go to ” person for both domestic and wildlife animals in jeopardy.
In 2020, Candy was the recipient of the first Wildlife Rehabilitator permit. PEIWRARI was founded shortly after and has been and continues to be operated out of Candy’s private residence in Southwest Lot 16, PEI.
Candy’s dream is to open a wildlife rehabilitation site.
The facility, a smaller version of Hope for Wildlife (Nova Scotia), would accommodate staff and volunteers assisting in the rehabilitation of the wildlife in her care. It will allow Candy to reclaim her home and, occasionally, some well deserved downtime. But, most importantly, Candy can be confident that her life-long work will pass on to others who share her vision.
Candy’s dream facility will provide a larger, well-planned space that will support intake, rehabilitation and release of wild animals in PEIWRARI’s care. It will include a paid intern position to whom Candy can confidently pass on her rehabber mantle. It will have a larger volunteer base who will take over many of the administration tasks and housekeeping duties, such as intake, record keeping, feeding and food inventory, enclosure cleaning and maintenance, to name a few. It will also include an education program for the public.
