I Have Found a Trapped or Entwined Animal, What Now?
If you have discovered an animal you believe to be trapped or entwined and you believe it is in need of rescue, please call us at 902-439-3311 and we will coordinate with our rescue team to get help there as soon as possible!
If you can, place a towel or blanket over the animal to reduce stress. Keep your distance, keep the area quiet and remove any young children or pets from the area until help arrives.
How Do I Deter/Remove Unwanted Raccoons?
Raccoons can make homes in unfavorable places – like attics or outbuildings. But please think twice before blocking off their access completely!
You could potentially block a mother out while blocking babies in, leading to deadly circumstances. Even worse, it is ILLEGAL to rehabilitate raccoons on Prince Edward Island, so if babies were discovered later after parents moved on it would lead to them all being euthanized.
Instead: try blasting loud music and using bright lights or flashing lights up in the area where the raccoons have been spotted. This will encourage any raccoons (and their possible babies) to move on to a different location!
If this is unsuccessful, we can connect you with our partners in pest management.
How Do I Deter/Remove Unwanted Skunks?
Similar to raccoons, skunks can make homes in unfavorable places – like under decks or outbuildings. But please think twice before blocking off their access completely! You could potentially block a mother out while blocking babies in, leading to deadly circumstances.
The animal has chosen to make a home in a location because it is nice and dark and quiet, to deter them you want to make it the opposite! Try blasting loud music and using bright lights or flashing lights up in the area where the skunk has been spotted. This will encourage any raccoons (and their possible babies) to move on to a different location!
If this is unsuccessful, we can connect you with our partners in pest management.
I Have Found a Shorebird Stranded on Land, What Now?
Shorebirds can sometimes be blown inland during a storm or during winter they might find themselves inland where they mistakenly thought they saw water.
Due to their anatomy, some species of shorebirds are unable to take off and fly from land and they can only do so from bodies of water.
First, try to see without handling the animal if they have any injuries, then call us at 902-439-3311. While waiting for rescue assistance, make sure to give the animal their space and keep the area calm and quiet.
I have found an injured animal within the National Parks, what now?
If you encounter injured wildlife within a National Park, you will need to contact Parks Canada Emergency Dispatch or Park Wardens at 1-877-852-3100 as we are not allowed to remove wildlife from the National Parks.
I have caught a raccoon/skunk in a live trap, now what?
First and foremost, it is a requirement to have a valid trapping license and permit from the PEI Department of Forests, Fish and Wildlife in order to trap fur-bearing animals on PEI during such times as designated by regulations.
If you have trapped unwanted wildlife in a live trap, you will need to release it on the same property. It is against Provincial Regulations to relocate wild animals to another location.
Why are you not allowed to rehabilitate racoons or coyotes?
Our Provincial Laws and Wildlife Rehabilitation Permits currently do not allow us to take in, raise, or treat injured or orphaned raccoons and coyotes. This is in part, due to the possibility of these animals becoming overly comfortable around humans, which can increase risks of bites and/or other negative conflicts.
